Yemen's Civil War Reaches Critical Point as Saudi-Led Forces Launch Counterattack Against Houthi Rebels Conflict in Yemen Escalates - Government to Retake Capital Sanaa Over 500 people have been killed in fighting between Iranian-backed Houthi rebels and Saudi-backed government forces in Yemen. The escalation began on Thursday when the rebels launched an offensive on the port city of Mokha. The country's deputy defense minister responded in state TV, stating that they had decided to retake the capital Sanaa from the rebels. The Houthi movement has also attacked southern Saudi Arabia, including the international airport in Abha and facilities belonging to the state-owned oil company Aramco. The Saudi-backed government has announced that its forces will respond to the Houthi's ”dangerous escalation”. Later on Tuesday, news outlets controlled by the Houthis reported that Saudi Arabia had launched attacks on targets in the province of Taiz, where fighting has been ongoing for days. Intense ground battles are currently taking place in the regions of Taiz, al-Bayda and al-Jawf – the last of which is seen as a key stronghold to retake the capital.
