Election concerns: Is the U.S. heading for a new civil war? This year's election campaign in the United States has been described as more polarized than in many years. The harsh rhetoric has led a long list of experts to warn of political violence in the aftermath of the election. Others go even further and speak fatefully of a full-blown civil war. "We Americans are just as polarized now as we were before the Civil War," says American political scientist Dan Mallinson to SVT.
There are also signs that the prophecies may be about to come true. Among other things, the right-wing group Proud Boys, which played a central role in the storming of the Capitol in 2021, now seems to be mobilizing. German police have arrested a total of eight suspected members of a right-wing group. They are said to have been training for a coup d'état, according to the prosecutor. The raids took place in 20 locations in the country during a dawn raid in Leipzig, Dresden and neighboring Poland. Also in Austria, a search was carried out.
The group's members are mostly young men who reject Germany's system of government and believe that the country is close to collapse. The group is waiting for a "day x" when they plan to take control of Saxony and other former East German regions. Several of them were already known to the police and are active in the right-wing environment online.
