Violence in Northern Ireland. The protests began on Monday after two were arrested following a suspected rape attempt on a teenage girl in Ballymena, north of Belfast. Masked individuals attacked police with petrol bombs, fireworks, and bricks. Homes and businesses were attacked, and people had to be evacuated, according to the police, who stated they are investigating hate crimes. Four residential houses were damaged by fire, the police wrote in a statement. – The violence was racially motivated and targeted our ethnic minority community and police, said police chief Ryan Henderson.The violence has spread to other locations, writes the Belfast Telegraph.Jim Allister, the leader of the unionist far-right party TUV, has said that the context for the initial protests was due to a "significant demographic change in the area" resulting from "unrestricted immigration."
