The houses are soon collapsing into the sea. Along the sandy beach in the small village of Portrane on Ireland's east coast, there are kilometer-long rows of concrete blocks. Placed there by the government, they help somewhat to absorb the waves' force before they crash into the sand dunes.
Behind the line of defense, the villas are lined up – most of them have already lost several meters of their gardens. And the sea continues to come closer. Professor Mary Bourke does not believe the houses will remain. – The entire garden up to the front door could be gone after three storms – that is how severe the erosion is, she says, pointing to a yellow stone villa.
