European summit in Paris – after the cold hand of the United States. Europe has received a cold hand from the United States when it comes to participating in the US-Russian talks on peace in Ukraine. This has led to several European countries gathering in Paris on Monday for an urgent meeting. "The background to the meeting is the week that has passed, where the new administration in the United States has come up with several initiatives that have made it clear to Europe that they no longer see the relationship with Europe as the United States' main priority and especially not the European defense," says SVT's foreign reporter Ida Linde, on site in Paris.
On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia will host the US-Russian talks to end the war in Ukraine. Ukraine itself has only been given a seat in the background, and its president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has announced that he will travel to Saudi Arabia, but that he will not participate in the talks on Tuesday. Lightning summoned meeting on Ukraine's future. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz believes that it is both "premature" and "inappropriate" to debate the issue of peacekeeping forces for Ukraine while the war is still ongoing. He says this after the lightning summit in Paris where European leaders gathered after Europe was excluded from the US-Russian talks on peace in Ukraine. Scholz also says that the United States and Europe must always act together when it comes to security.

Russia clarifies: Talks should be bilateral. Russian President Vladimir Putin's foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, clarified on Monday upon arrival in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, that talks on Ukraine will be held bilaterally. "We came to negotiate with American colleagues," Ushakov said, according to the Russian news agency Ria. He dismissed any suggestions to include other parties and stressed that "there can be no trilateral talks in Riyadh." See the article on SVT Nyheter.
