In a clip recorded on Saturday – the day before the attack – the suspected attacker is said to have sworn allegiance to the terrorist group 'Islamic State,' writes German Bild. Recordings of that kind often appear before a terrorist attack. IS supporter Anis Amri, who drove a truck into a Christmas market in Berlin in 2016 and killed 12 people, recorded a similar video, writes TT. Abdul Ballout was well-known to the German legal system. Last year, the 21-year-old traveled to Syria in a failed attempt to fight for IS. German security authorities had been monitoring Ballout right up until shortly before the attack, according to the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.
