South Korea's president is convicted in an impeachment vote. South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol is convicted in an impeachment vote after he declared a short-lived martial law. The announcement was received with cheers in demonstrating crowds outside the parliament.
Now it is up to South Korea's Constitutional Court to decide whether the decision should be upheld and Yoon removed, or whether it should be annulled. "As soon as the official handover from the parliament to the president's office and to the Constitutional Court is completed, Yoon Suk Yeol loses all his powers as president," says SVT's Asia correspondent Tilde Lewin.
According to her, the decision of the Constitutional Court must be made within six months. Six judges will then be required to vote for Yoon Suk-Yeol to be convicted.
