Reports: Infantino calls emergency meeting. The president of the International Football Association (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, has called an emergency meeting in Morocco following recent strong criticism, according to The Times. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss how Infantino can cling to power, The Times writes, citing sources. His most loyal associates are also said to have urged several of FIFA's 211 member countries to publicly support Infantino.
Several national associations have, since Infantino presented his now-scrapped plan to sell World Cup shares to private investors, announced that they do not support Infantino for re-election in March. Opposition to the plans has also been raised internally. See the article on SVT Nyheter.
FIFA top official's internal message: 'Sad' Mattias Grafström is Secretary General of FIFA. In an internal message to employees of the organization, he wrote about the recent turbulence, Sky News reports. 'A sad and regrettable series of events – which, thankfully, ended with the permanent abandonment of the FFE project – as distressed as we are about them, should not overshadow this reality,' he writes and continues: 'We have all been thrown into a turbulence that is hard to understand and accept, but as Secretary General I urge you to continue focusing on what has always united us: serving football and our 211 member associations, hand in hand with all relevant stakeholders and in full compliance with FIFA's statutes and regulations.'
Grafström thanks FIFA's staff for their 'commitment, resilience, and dedication to football.' 'I assure you that as members of the administration, you will be defended and protected from the political context we are currently experiencing. You don't need to worry.' See the article on SVT News.
