Russian influence threatens double elections in Moldova: "Could be the dirtiest in many years" Sunday is a big election day in Moldova. On the same day that Moldovans will vote on who will be the country's president for the next four years, a referendum will also be held on whether Moldova should continue to try to become an EU member or not.
Moldovan police have discovered a large-scale attempt to buy no votes in the EU referendum. More than €1.5 million is said to have been brought into the country via criminal networks linked to Moldovan politician and businessman Ilan Shor, who lives in Russian exile. This is to buy the votes of over 150,000 Moldovans with the goal of creating instability and chaos in the country.
Just last week, Moldovan authorities uncovered another plot in which over 100 young Moldovans were allegedly trained by special forces in Moscow to generate civil disorder in connection with the elections. Some are also said to have received more advanced training in guerrilla camps in Serbia and Bosnia.
But one who has made it to the polling station is 88-year-old Maria from Transnistria, who was born in Romania and was also a citizen of the Soviet Union.
