Will travel to Aleppo become this year's Christmas gift in the Western mosques?
The jihadist group celebrates in Aleppo. The Syrian regime is reported to have lost control of the country's second largest city, Aleppo.
In the space of just a few hours, the UN-designated jihadist group Hayat Tahrir-al Sham (HTS) took control of large parts of Aleppo. Since 2016, the Assad regime has been in control of the city, and the retaking of Aleppo from the rebel groups is seen as one of the biggest turning points in the civil war that has been raging for more than 14 years.
Pictures from Aleppo show, among other things, how fighters from the armed group celebrate standing on a razed statue of Bassil al-Assad, the president's brother. At the same time, they are waving the opposition flag. HTS supporters have taken over the streets and are driving around on trucks in the city of two million.
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), HTS has taken control of government facilities, prisons, and the airport in Aleppo. Watch the feature on SVT News.
Jihadists have taken Aleppo after a lightning offensive. From northern Syria, jihadist rebels are reported to have taken large parts of Aleppo and also taken control of the airport.
