EU drops sanctions on Russian oligarchs. Two Russian oligarchs are removed from the EU's renewed sanctions list. Now, Ukraine's president criticizes the EU. “No name is on the list by mistake,” writes Volodymyr Zelenskyy. On Tuesday, the EU extended its sanctions package against nearly 3,000 individuals and companies accused of supporting Russia's war in Ukraine. But two Russian billionaires, oligarchs Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman, were removed from the list. This comes after, among other things, France opposed the EU. Alisher Usmanov is a Russian-Uzbek businessman who built his fortune in the metal and mining industry after the fall of the Soviet Union. In the EU's original 2022 sanctions decision, he was described as “one of Putin's favorite oligarchs.” It is unclear why Azerbaijan is trying to negotiate a prisoner exchange with France to have a Russian-Uzbek oligarch removed from the sanctions list, instead of one of the country's own sanctioned citizens or companies.
Mikhail Fridman is a co-founder of the Russian business group Alfa Group and part of Russian President Vladimir Putin's inner circle. The subsidiary Alfa Insurance has insured vehicles used by Russian forces in Ukraine. Watch the segment on SVT Nyheter.
