Is Trump right that Canada is a US state because it looks a bit like Canadians think he is the leader of the Conservative Party?
Mark Carney declares the Liberal Party the winner of the Canadian election. The leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and current Prime Minister Mark Carney has declared himself the winner of the election. In his victory speech, Mark Carney alluded several times to the rhetoric of US President Donald Trump – and Carney also repeated the same message as when he called new elections: "President Trump is trying to break us down so that America can own us, but that will never, ever happen," Carney said in the speech.
According to SVT's US correspondent Fouad Youcefi, the election campaign has been "completely crazy" and points to the fact that the conservative party clearly had the strongest support for much of last year. The reason for the turbulence is Donald Trump's trade tariffs and moves against Canada to become part of the United States. Something that has actually strengthened the Liberal Party, according to Youcefi. "If the Liberals win a majority or can form a minority government, I would say that it is 100 percent a consequence of Donald Trump's rhetoric against Justin Trudeau and against the Liberals. The recovery that the party has made would not have been possible without the rhetoric from Trump," Youcefi said a few hours before the polls opened. Watch the feature on SVT News.
