Robotic researchers are now investigating whether the tunnels can be used as shelters where astronauts can live and reside in the future. – Investigating these caves is of great interest to several space agencies, says Raúl Domínguez, a robotics researcher and software engineer at the German company DFKI in Bremen.
He has collaborated with a research team at the Universidad de Málaga who has developed a system of robots in close collaboration with the European Space Agency ESA. The robots can cooperate and communicate with each other and can be remotely controlled from Earth, they show in a study published in Science Robotics.
